Heavy Rain triggers severe flooding across communities in Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago: Multiple communities across the Couva area, in Trinidad and Tobago are reportedly facing intense flooding, following heavy rainfall. The Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation (CTTRC) has activated the disaster management teams, who have been assisting the affected residents.

The teams were deployed on Wednesday evening, August 12, 2026.

Ryan Rampersad, the regional corporation chairman, noted that the Council members, National Programme for the Upkeep of Public Spaces (NPUPS), and the CTTRC team are working to provide essentials to the affected residents.

Our dedicated Council members, NPUPS, and the entire CTTRC team were on the ground, working tirelessly to distribute sandbags to residents in need, he said.

He mentioned that flooding has affected the areas including Claxton Bay, Couva, California and several other parts across the region. In the video, Rampersad noted that the priority was the preparation and distribution of sandbags to residents in the flood-affected parts of the region.

He announced that the residents were arriving at the corporation’s stockpile in Couva to collect the sandbags as the authorities were preparing additional supplies for the affected residents across the communities.

Rampersad further expressed his gratitude towards the residents for showing patience as the corporation personnel worked to respond to the flooding.

He mentioned, It has been an exorbitant amount of rainfall in a very short space of time.

The authorities noted, the corporation’s Disaster Management Unit has been activated and is coordinating the response with other officials working in disaster management activities.

Rampersad said the rainfall was very intense as a large volume of water falling was recorded in a short period of time.

In the video, he highlighted the flooding and said the corporation would move to the next phase of its response once the immediate threat subsides.

He reassured the residents saying that the authorities will identify the areas where drains and waterways have clogged and will carry out the cleaning and unclogging works.

The corporation is currently monitoring the conditions in the affected communities and will continue deploying its disaster management teams.
