Trinidad: Man shot dead at Wallerfield home in early morning attack

Trinidad and Tobago: A 49-year-old man found shot dead inside his residence in Wallerfield, Arima, in the early hours of Monday, August 24, as police are investigating the sequence of events related to the killing.

As per the reports, the deceased has been identified as Kumar Balkissoon. Police were informed immediately after 12:50 a.m. upon receiving a report of explosive sounds heard by local residents in the Yucatan Road area of Wallerfield.

According to the information provided to the police, officers who arrived at the scene headed to a two-storey wooden house, where Balkissoon’s brother guided police personnels toward the ground floor.

The 49-year-old spotted motionless on the floor lying on his back sustaining gunshot in his head. The victim’s brother informed the investigators that he heard Balkissoon’s shout before hearing multiple strong explosions. He eventually listened to a sound that seemed to be metal sheeting being struck. 

Subsequently, the District Medical Officer arrived at the scene and declared Balkissoon dead. Investigating officers from the Special Evidence Recovery Unit (SERU) reportedly inspected and assessed the site of the incident.

Three used 9mm cartridge shells were allegedly retrieved while investigating the case. The conditions resulting in the shooting, along with the information of the person responsible and the motive have not been identified publicly.

Currently, the police have not declared any arrest or charged anyone in connection with the killing. The government records from Trinidad and Tobago’s Electoral and Boundaries Commission independently identify the person killed as Kumar Balkison.

The shooting incident remains a matter of ongoing investigation whereas investigators are intended to proceed collecting forensic and witness evidence as they can strongly assist to help advance the investigation.
