St. Kitts and Nevis: The Ministry of Health is celebrating International Nurses Day which commenced with the activities on May 6, 2024 and will last till May 12, 2024. A week long activities are being taken under the theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future. The Economic Power of Care.” Curtis Martin, an acting Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry addressed in observance of International Nurses day. He extended an appreciation to the nurses who serve as the cornerstone of the country's Health Care System. He further casted light on how strategic investment in nursing can bring considerable economic and societal benefits. He added the significance behind the theme of nurses day which stated that nursing is not merely a profession, is a calling to serve to heal and to care for others' jobs in the most vulnerable moments. “Nurses are not only the backbone of our Healthcare System but also a driving force for economic Prosperity,” said the Secretary. He further highlighted the contribution which nurses foster towards the people of the nation during their most vulnerable times. He added there are many who go above and beyond to provide the best quality care to the patients. “The economic power of care lies in the invaluable contribution of nurses to our society,” said the Minister Curtis Martin. Through such a statement, he emphasized on the key role which nurses play for the well-being of the country. Further, he outlined that investing in the nurses acts as a crucial step towards a healthier and prosperous Island state. It as well is necessary to achieve the United Nations Sustainable development goal. While addressing, he further recognized the past achievements of the nurses of St. Kitts and Nevis. And, highlighted that the health ministry will remain committed towards investing in the nurses’ education training and professional development. Adding to it, he mentioned the inaugural presentation of the St. Kitts and Nevis Nursing and Midwifery strategic plans from 2024 to 2028. These were introduced on April 10, 2024 under the guidance of the Dr. Rondalyn Dennis who is a principal nursing officer. And outlined that the presentation by Batcher garnered significant turnout with over 70 nurses in attendance from both St. Kitts and Nevis. Among them, several of the nurse staff was present that is; senior nurses administrators, nurse educators, various categories of nursing staff and student nurses from the institutional based nursing services and the division of health sciences.
