Leader of St Kitts and Nevis Labour party and former Prime Minister Dr Denzil L. Douglas shared his Labour Day address through a Facebook live on Monday.

The leader asserted that this Labour Day is unlike any other because of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in the entire world. He added that this pandemic has resulted in the downfall of the economy of St Kitts and Nevis and impacted the workers of the country.

As per the Former Prime Minister, workers associated with the tourism industry are under the radar of this crisis in the country. He stated that the hospitality industry is profoundly altered, as a large number of people are now either unemployed or receiving no work at all in this twin-island nation.

He stated that many have not received their wages and salaries from two months in the tourism industry in St Kitts and Nevis. Workers associated with the manufacturing industry are working on reduced hours and can barely meet the daily costs of living for themselves and their families.

"This pandemic has changed the way we live and work in the society, nationwide lockdowns and curfews in just four months have devasted significant things," added Dr Douglas.

As per Dr Douglas, workers are worse affected by this crisis, and even the self-employed are not able to make a living.

He highlighted on the ideologies of the Labour party and stated that the party has blossomed from the Labour Movement, which is why they respect the values of the workers.

Besides this, he discussed the plans of the Labour Party for St Kitts and Nevis and stated that if the party achieves to retain power in upcoming general elections, then they will enforce exclusive benefits and relaxations for the workers in both public and private sectors in the country
