Around 400 years after Barbados became a British colony, it is now the newest republic. Dame Sandra Prunella Mason, 72, served as the governor-general of Barbados since 2018. After studying at Queen's College, Mason got her judicial education in London accompanied by a judicial fellowship in Canada.
She was elected to be the President through a joint meeting of both the Houses of Parliament. The announcement was made in October by the
Speaker of the House of Assembly Arthur Holder.
The ceremony of Barbados becoming a republic was attended by the
Prince of Wales and singer Rihanna. Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley announced Rihanna as the "National Hero" of the country.
In his address, Prince Charles admitted the "appalling atrocity of slavery" Barbados experienced.
To imply the official change of power, a final tribute was made to the British monarchy, and the Royal Standard flag was taken down and replaced.
