Prime Minister of Dominica Dr Roosevelt Skerrit congratulated Barbados on becoming the world's newest republic. He shared a long message on his social media handles, and he also sent out best wishes to the first President, Dame Sandra Prunella Mason. He said the transition of Barbados to Republican status is indeed a momentous occasion that promises a more profound sense of self-determination and purpose among the citizens of Barbados. "The Government and People of Dominica extend warmest congratulations to the Government and People of Barbados on becoming a Republic," wrote the Prime Minister.

He further stated, "We also extend best wishes to Her Excellency Dame Sandra Prunella Mason GCMG, DA, QC, who was elected the first President of the Republic of Barbados. We stand in solidarity with the leadership and citizens of Barbados as you welcome a new system of governance, which is in line with the values and ambitions of the population."

Around 400 years after Barbados became a British colony, it is now the newest republic. Dame Sandra Prunella Mason, 72, served as the governor-general of Barbados since 2018. After studying at Queen's College, Mason got her judicial education in London accompanied by a judicial fellowship in Canada.

She was elected to be the President through a joint meeting of both the Houses of Parliament. The announcement was made in October by the

Speaker of the House of Assembly Arthur Holder.

The ceremony of Barbados becoming a republic was attended by the

Prince of Wales and singer Rihanna. Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley announced Rihanna as the "National Hero" of the country.

In his address, Prince Charles admitted the "appalling atrocity of slavery" Barbados experienced.

To imply the official change of power, a final tribute was made to the British monarchy, and the Royal Standard flag was taken down and replaced.
