Tremors of 4.3 Magnitude Earthquake felt across St Kitts and Nevis

Tremors of a mild earthquake of 4.3 magnitude were reportedly felt in St Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday Morning at around 08:50 AM Northwest of Basseterre As per the reports, a quake of 155km at latitude 18.60N and longitude 63.24W at a depth of 10 kilometres has been recorded in the region. Besides St Kitts and Nevis, tremors were also felt in other areas, such as Anguilla, NW of St. John’s Antigua and Barbuda and Montserrat, recorded 226 Km and 231 Km, respectively.  The people of St Maarten also felt the earthquake, while no reports of any damage have been recorded.  However, the reports also stated that, earlier on the same day, a quake of about 3.2 magnitude was recorded in over 10 Caribbean nations at 6:41 AM. These affected countries are the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Saint Martin, Sint Maarten, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, U.S. Virgin Islands, Venezuela, Caribbean Netherlands, Saint Barthélemy, Antigua and Barbuda, and Anguilla. As per some recent research, the twin-island nation of St Kitts and Nevis has a medium earthquake hazard in the future. The last quake in the region was observed on July 12, 2023, at around 4:30 PM, with a 6.6 magnitude in the North Atlantic Ocean. No reports of damages to the people have been recorded. Meanwhile, the Government of St Kitts and Nevis has also been undertaking every possible initiative to navigate climate change in the country. Recently, a webinar on Unveiling the National Integrated Policy & Governance Framework for Weather, Water & Climate Services was also held in an active collaboration by the Government with the policymakers, stakeholders, and the community.  This webinar was conducted on January 12 on a virtual basis and has presented various strategies to shape the future of St. Kitts & Nevis in the face of climate challenges.
