Police seized 2.5 tons of methamphetamine in Europe’s biggest ever drug haul

Dutch police said they have seized 2.5 tons of methamphetamine in what they called as Europe’s biggest ever haul of drug.

The drugs were found stashed behind a wall in a building in the port city of Rotterdam.

Police spokesman Thomas Aling said in a statement Wednesday that the drugs, which were found last week and have since been destroyed, had a street value of hundreds of millions of euros, and that this “quantity has never before been discovered in Europe.”

Further investigations led detectives to a warehouse in the central city of Utrecht where they discovered 17,500 liters (4,623 gallons) of chemicals that could be used for washing cocaine and producing synthetic drugs.

At the same location in Utrecht, police also found hollowed-out rocks that they believe were used to transport the drugs. The drugs have been destroyed, the police said.

No arrests have yet been made following last week’s haul, but investigations are continuing, Aling said.

Recent waste water tests have shown that meth usage levels in Dutch cities is relatively low compared to the United States or Australia, but is rising.
