Bangladesh: The media is the fourth pillar of democracy – the watchdog for the people in place to keep a continuous vigilance on the executive, the legislature and judiciary. But some of the fake and poor journalistic practices victimise the others to the corridors of power with phoney news and defamation of prestigious nations.

A Bangladeshi tabloid, Weekly Blitz displayed the poor, unethical and biased journalism from a long time in the past and continues to push misinformation on their domain.

According to reliable sources from the Caribbean nation’s foreign ministry, it was revealed that Editor of tabloid, Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury applied for the citizenship of a Caribbean country and was refused during due diligence processing as he was charged with highly sensitive criminal, sedition and connection to international terrorism activities.

The fraudulent website released an entirely fake and misinterpreted article on the website about UAE nationals of being scared to buy Caribbean citizenship. Surprisingly, the flawed news item incorrectly named (The St Kitts, Dominica and Nevis) Caribbean countries, which shows the writer has minimal knowledge about nations itself as St Kitts and Nevis is one country, and Dominica is another.

Moreover, the information given in the fake article lacks facts and figures and did not carry a single person’s testimony on the issue. However, statements of Sam Bayat, MD of Bayat Legal Services was also torn and misinterpreted by the organisation which is a shameful act of journalism. A special interview of Bayat was conducted and published by WIC News, which had nowhere mentioned about any UAE national being scared of taking Caribbean citizenship. The article also gives the reference of Gulf News interview of Sam Bayat, similarly, which also did not mention anything about the public being afraid of applying Citizenship application.

In connection to this defamation, a Caribbean island nation displayed a strong commitment against false and misinformation defaming whole of the region and registered a police complaint against Editor of Bangladeshi tabloid Weekly Blitz. “We have taken this matter very seriously, and we will reach out to the honourable court to obtain an international arrest warrant against editor Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury for using news medium for his personal grudges of CBI application refusal,” said senior police officer after the official complaint was registered.

Unsurprisingly, it is speculated that the wrong information was being poured to Choudhury by the opposition of the Commonwealth of Dominica. Reliable sources revealed that all this fake data was given to the editor by opposition leader himself, Lennox Linton, who intentionally used this website during the election period as well for spreading defamatory propaganda against the government. There have been several attempts by the opposition leader to defame the nation which led his political party a crushing defeat in 2019 general elections of Dominica.

According to data, Choudhury applied for Citizenship to flee from Bangladesh as he is facing charges of sedition, treason, blasphemy and espionage since January 2004. Choudhury was arrested on 29 November 2003 at Dhakka airport, when he was found carrying discs and papers related to sensitive issues including association with international terror outfit al-Qaeda and its network in Bangladesh. He has been convicted for more than 4 years for criminal activities.
