As per the recent COVID-19 statistics provided by the Ministry of Health and Wellness Dominica, currently, there are no active cases in the island nation.
After recording the first COVID-19 case in 2020, Dominica recorded a total of 175 cases, all of whom have successfully recovered from the virus disease. Dominica is also among the few very countries in the world to record zero coronavirus related deaths.
The small island nation is also rapidly vaccinating its population; while 188864 have received the first dose vaccine, around 13144 are fully vaccinated with two doses of the vaccine.
Ministry of Health stated that there are 31 people in the GOCD quarantine, while no contacts are currently under investigation. Over 975 contacts were identified since the first case, and all were cleared soon after.
As per the National Epimdemiologist Dr Shlauddin Ahmed, Dominica has not recorded any local coronavirus case for months, and the recently recovered patients were all imported.
The triumph of being a COVID-19 free nation came for Dominica after the government implemented strict limitations that included mandatory testing at all ports of entry, 14 quarantine and submission of a negative RT-PCR COVID-19 report, not more than 72-hours old prior to entry. Not only that, Dominica was among the first countries in the Caribbean to receive coronavirus vaccine as India provided 70,000 doses of Astrazeneca Oxford vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India. Later, 20,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine were donated by the People's Republic of China and PM Skerrit's wife, Melissa Skerrit, received the first dose of the Chinese vaccine. Dominica also received additional 28,800 doses from the COVAX facility. Even though there are currently no active cases of COVID-19 in Dominica, the government have advised people to exercise caution and wear face masks and maintain a 6-feet distance in public places. With no active coronavirus cases, Dominica has achieved what big economies across the world are striving to get.
