The U.S. Embassy to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the OECS was pleased to host Shanna McClain, PhD on Friday, May 31, 2019 for an educational presentation on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Dr. McClain is the Program Lead for Risk Reduction and Resilience with NASA's Disasters Program. Her work involves developing resilience-based programs in fragile and crisis-affected areas.
Dr. McClain spoke about the great honor it was to teach children, especially young girls, about the impact they could have in the STEM fields. Her interactive presentation focused on the role of students in promoting environmental resilience and the work done by the NASA Disasters Program in STEM education.
These informative sessions to the Blackman and Gollop Primary School and the Girl Guides Association were part of the Embassy’s ongoing efforts to promote education in the fields of STEM.
U.S. Embassy Bridgetown Public Affairs Officer James Rodriguez highlighted the fact that the U.S. Embassy maintains its commitment to promoting STEM education in the Eastern Caribbean and helping to create greater opportunities for the youth of the region through education.
He supported Dr. McClain’s comments, sharing that “education in the STEM fields drives economic growth, fuels innovation, and empowers youth — in the United States, Barbados, and around the world.”
The U.S. Embassy Bridgetown remains committed to supporting local programs and bolstering resources through speaker presentations, and book and equipment donations to schools towards increasing economic opportunities.
