Dominica: New Delices, Morne Jaune Primary School commissioned

Delices, Dominica: The Government of Dominica commissioned the newly rehabilitated Delices Primary School on Wednesday, May 11. The Government of Canada funded the EC$1.1 million project through the Caribbean Development Bank and the Government of Dominica as part of the Dominica Climate Resilience and Restoration Project. The new features include additional classrooms, an early childhood centre, library, auditorium, Home Economics Room and improved washroom facilities. Besides this, the Morne Jaune Primary School students are attending classes in new and improved settings. The rehabilitated school plant was formally handed over on Wednesday, May 11. It was also funded by the government of Canada.

The Minister of Tourism Octavia Alfred stated that the government of Dominica is making all efforts to build resilient school infrastructures islandwide. She said as the country is often a target of natural disasters, it is essential to have a "stronger, resilient" infrastructure. She said the new Delices Primary School is equipped with a library, home economic room, early childhood centre, auditorium and the provision of ICT equipment. The government will also commission the W.S Stevens Primary School on Friday, May 13, from 10: 30 a.m. Minister for Housing and Urban Development Reginald Austrie stated that the government is trying to create a safe, secure learning environment in schools by providing advanced infrastructure. He said the new school buildings would enable students to be academically competitive in the global situation. The commissioning of these new school buildings is also a part of the Dominica Climate Resilience and Restoration Project funded by the Government of Canada through the Caribbean Development Bank in the post-Hurricane Maria period. The US$7.5 million project includes the construction, restoration of 4 primary schools and other details such as the provision of ICT equipment, furniture, education materials and supplies. People are extremely happy with the commissioning of new schools and expressed their gratitude via social media. A Facebook user named Fernanda George wrote, "Congrats to the Government of Dominica. We on the South, East deserve the best, Although we are small in population,".
