Showdown Mas Camp kept Dominica’s flag flying high this year as a number of its representatives placed in the winners' row in various regional calypso competitions.
The latest successful contender was Charis Daniel who stormed into the winners row at the Nevis Culturama calypso competition in August.
The singer from the Nature Isle unleashed one of the richest and most alluring singing voices at the event and captivated the audience with her charm and offhand charisma on stage.
Her renditions of two intriguing calypsos – Nobody Doh Love Me and Not Loving thy Neighbour – made her a strong contender to be the calypso monarch.
Both songs were written by Dominican songwriter Pat Aaron.
She finished in second place, cementing her status as as an exceptional new artiste.
Welcomed by the region
Charis made her debut in Dominica in 2015.
In her debut year, she won the Champ of the Camp crown, and in 2016 she made it to the semi-finals of the calypso competition. She has since moved to Nevis where she bravely decided to compete in the annual calypso competition.
“Surprisingly the Nevisians and Kittians welcomed me with open arms,” Charis said.
And she needed their support because she came up against 21 contenders in the semi-finals and nine leading calypsonians in the finals.
“I felt very proud of myself due to the fact that I sang against veterans” she said, explaining that she was the only one of the calypso finalists who was not a seasoned campaigner.
“I was the only newbie. I felt great competing against the veterans and even getting a place.”
