In the wake of candidate launch at Marigot on coming Sunday, 18 August, representatives of Dominica Labour Party Ian Douglas and Edward Registe held a conference today. During the press brief, the candidate from Grand Bay constituency, Edward Registe said that Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit will make announcements regarding the most important development of new Marigot hospital and also about the international airport at the DLP event.

Divulging the details, Minister of Trade, Energy and Employment Ian Douglas said that they are moving into the Marigot in full force and are very excited for the launching of DLP’s candidate Gregory “Karessah” Riviere from the Marigot constituency. “Since the destruction of hurricane Maria Gregory have been helping every single person of his constituency and youth across the country.”

“The exciting aspect of this campaign is that even the new candidates who are coming on board right now, they come on board with the track record of service. Dr Irving McIntyre, Edward Registe, Octavia Alfred (Teacher Bonnie), Adis King, Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite and Melissa Skerrit, all of the candidates come in the record of service to their fellow people and communities. That is why we are very happy as Gregory agreed to be part of this slate of candidates for upcoming elections.”

During the briefing, Ian Douglas said history is evident that the people of Marigot do not vote for the party but the candidate himself. “As I have always said that Gregory is a national figure and he will definitely triumph the general elections in Marigot constituency. There is no seat which is out of the reach of Dominica Labour Party.”

Adding points to press briefing, Edward Registe said 5 more candidates are left to be launched and as they move along the campaign, the launch of Sunday is most anticipated one. “We are looking forward to a grand event. we will speak directly to the people of Marigot to encourage them to support our candidate Gregory Riviere, who we believe is a solid candidate and the one who can have a major turnover during his tenure. We have mobilised our supporters across the country to join us at Marigot Fisheries Complex on Sunday.”

Not only this, but the leaders also expressed that they have better chance to win this election against Opposition Leader Lennox Linton and they also count Marigot in the winning list of the candidate in upcoming general elections.

They alleged Lennox Linton in lack of representation to the people of Marigot – from where he was elected as Member Parliament – as he was not there in the time of need. They said that after the winning of Karessah in the particular constituency, inhabitants will be happier to see the upper level of representation for them. Along with that, they said DLP will reach out to every Dominican and encourage them to exercise their franchise in forthcoming elections.

Notably, Marigot constituency is the citadel of the United Workers Party in Dominica – which is the second strongest party in the country – as the leader of UWP Lennox Linton contests from the same. If we collect the data of previous election statistics, DLP lost from UWP by around 600 votes in which Lennox Linton was elected as the representative for the people of Marigot.
