Dominica’s government launches National Beautification campaign to plant 1 million saplings

Almighty blessed humans on this earth with different wonderful creations like mountains, rocks, oceans, forests and many others to balance nature. With the passage of the time, most of the humans started ignoring nature and started indulging in their self-interests, in consequences natural resources saw a downfall in most of the countries across the world.

In a move aimed at enhancing green cover in the country, Dominica’s government and Ministry of Environment, Climate Resilience, Disaster Management and Urban Renewal, Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Divisions introduced National Beautification campaign under which 1 million plants saplings will be planted across the island.

The beatification campaign will be in a phased manner and in the first phase it will cover the Douglas Charles airport roads and Pointe Mitchel through Soufriere to Scotts head as the Jungle Bay hotel which was recently re-inaugurated by the government is situated there.

During the launch of National Beautification, Minister of DLP government, Joseph Isaac said, “I have a great passion for beatification and cleanliness, we are blessed with the greenery and we ourselves need to get involved in preserving the nature and taking care of it”. He said that they need to move to a different level for this country, the initiative is a sub-initiative of the master plan of moving Dominica to become the first climate resilient country in the world.

“It's not just planting the trees, but we have selected the trees that will beautify the place and improve the aesthetic of the environment and also the plants which are resilient to storms”, he added.

While showing concerns over the green belt, Isaac said, “Our grandfathers actually planted trees and built nurseries for our future, but the question is that what are we doing in this. I say today it is now our turn, whether we are in high school, state college or in any private sector, it is our island so we have to whatever it takes to make it beautiful”

With the slogan of each one, teach one, plant one, the government came up with the beautification campaign, in which they are persuading the citizens of Dominica to volunteer in making the island a better country. “Every initiative you do or any problem you tend to solve, it starts at the home only. We call upon entire Dominica in cleaning the environment and planting trees” said Joseph Isaac.

Describing this campaign as a sub-objective of making Dominica first climate resilient country under the leadership of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Minister said, “we will not leave any stone unturned until we reach our vision”

Along with this addressing the gathering, Permanent Secretary Careen Prevost said that the campaign will create greener locality and will expand in the urban areas as well. “National Employment Programme is the major partner of the National Beatification campaign” she added.
