Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing heartfelt condolences to the many families who have lost loved ones due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country and expressed solidarity. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and your people as you seek to overcome this scourge.” Currently, the people of India are facing a tragic situation due to the COVID-19 outbreak as it reported record 402,110 positive cases and 3,522 deaths in the last 24 hours.

In a letter written on April 28, 2021, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit stated, “I, on behalf of the people and government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, express my deepest sympathy to the people and government of the Republic of India as you battle against this new wave of COVID-19.”

Expressing solidarity with India, PM said that it is clear that the fight against this pandemic is a global fight, and the government of Dominica stands in solidarity with India and pledges its support to the government and people of India in this difficult time.

PM Skerrit praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing COVID-19 vaccines (Oxford Astra-Zeneca) to many countries in the world, including Dominica. “The vaccine Maitri initiative of the government of India has had a profoundly positive impact on the many countries that have benefited from it, including my own.”

In the month of February, Dominica received 70,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines from India under the Vaccine Maitri Initiative. Some of the vaccine jabs were distributed to other CARICOM countries to immunise their frontline and healthcare workers.

“I am confident that with your (PM Modi’s) leadership and the resilience of your people, the Republic of India will not only defeat COVID-19 but emerge stronger from this pandemic,” Prime Minister Skerrit added.

Local media reported that in India, the cases are soaring, and there has been a dire lack of medical supplies, including oxygen. Many countries worldwide have expressed solidarity with India, and some have already delivered oxygen concentrators, oxygen supplies, and other essential medical equipments.
