CARICOM chairman congratulates PM Skerrit for massive victory

The chairman of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) Allen Chastanet congratulated Dr Roosevelt Skerrit and his Dominica Labour Party for their historic victory in general elections.

Allen Chastanet toasted the leader through a facebook post, where he wrote,"I congratulate Dr Roosevelt Skerrit and Dominica Labour Party for astounding victory in the general election on December 6."

He said that it is transcendent that people of Dominica manifested their confidence once again towards the leadership of Dr Skerrit and his ruling Dominica Labour Party.

"I look foremost to working with the re-elected Government of Dominica in attempting to ensure the purpose of a climate-resilient country and region is accomplished as we recommence to proceed with our quest for sustainable development." added Allen Chastanet chairman CARICOM.

Polling for parliamentary elections in Dominica for 21 seats was held on Friday. Dominica Labour Party won 18 out of the total 21 seats whereas the opposition United Workers Party could only get mere three seats.

Melissa Skerrit, wife of Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit also won from the Roseau Central constituency where the opposition had a hold from several years.

Elections were conducted under high security following the recent clashes between public and police clashes from the past few days. Regional Security System (RSS) worked with the local police to handle critical situations in the country.

Furthermore, these elections were considered extremely important for both DLP and UWP because the country was already under the administration of the latter from almost two decades.

United Workers Party had six seats in parliament earlier which are now limited to only three. The elections resulted as a disappointment to UWP as they had already declared themselves winners weeks ago.

However, even the polls results had revealed the success of the Dominica Labour Party with their survey's.
