The Ministry of Public Works and Ports in Dominica has declared the Anse de Mai bridge as "partially compromised".
The ministry is currently assessing the situation and confirm what action is required.
No further information has been provided.
At present the bridge is closed for vehicles weighing five tonnes or more – they are being advised to find alternative routes.
In an urgent statement, a spokesman for the government said: "The Ministry of Public Works and Ports apologises for any inconvenience caused and reassures the general public that the ministry is working feverishly to restore full access through the bridge."
