26 families decided to get climate-resilient homes in Dominica

Roseau, Dominica: Minister of Housing and Urban Development- Reginald Austrie announced in Cabinet update on Tuesday,  that 26 recipients have been decided as beneficiaries who would be receiving climate-resilient home in Belle Vue Rawle Development.

Minister added that the cabinet has approved the list of these 26 recipients.

"The government of Dominica over the years in its mission the housing structure of the country with modern, resilient housing in partnership with MMCE is here to deliver on promises," added Minister Austrie.

Besides this, he added that these 26 families would receive the keys to their homes and the total 140 individuals would be rehabilitated to these climate-resilient houses. '

Furthermore, he added that this housing development includes three-bedroom units constructed with concrete roof and structure. He said these homes contain solar water heaters and also decorative roof covering.

Minister noted that each unit comes with complete kitchen and bathroom installations.

Minister of Housing Development asserted that to date 897 homes had been constructed under MMCE housing programme.

"Notwithstanding COVID-19, we continue to pursue our goal to ensure that our people are properly homed," added Minister Reginald Austrie.

The government of Dominica intends to build 5,000 climate-resilient homes, and the goal is also to be the world's first climate-resilient country.

The homes are constructed under the National Programme. Housing units in Castle Bruce, La Plaine, Cotton Hill, George Town, Grand Bay, Grand Fond, San Sauveur and Bellevue Choppin are already completed.

Minister of Education, Human Resources Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence Octavia Alfred stated that under the Dominica climate-resilient and restoration project with collaborative efforts with the government of Canada and Caribbean Development Bank five schools were identified for rehabilitation.

She noted that the total cost estimated for this initiative is 20.2 million dollars. Minister Alfred mentioned that the Salisbury Primary School's work is completed and it would be handed over soon.
