Three teenagers have been arrested after a 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in a street attack.

Police were called at about 19:00 GMT on Tuesday to Caledonian Road in Islington, north London. The victim died at the scene.

Two boys aged 16 and 17, who were arrested near the area, have been taken into custody at a north London police station.

A man, aged 18, was arrested at an address in Islington.

All three remain in custody.

The stabbing happened just over a mile away (about 1.6km) from The Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal played Cardiff City on Tuesday evening.

Supporters were told to avoid Caledonian Road after the football match.

Formal identification has yet to take place but the Met Police said officers were "confident they know the identity of the deceased".

A post-mortem examination was due to be held, the force added.

The teenage victim is the fifth person to be fatally stabbed in London so far this year.

Elsewhere in the capital on Tuesday, a woman was found with stab injuries in Baring Road, Bromley, and in a separate attack, a man was stabbed in Spray Street, Woolwich.

Both victims were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Emergency vehicles, including a police van and ambulances, were at the scene of the incident, which was cordoned off to the public.

A Section 60 stop and search order, which allows police to search anyone in a given area, was put in place until 3 am on Wednesday, covering much of Islington, Clerkenwell, Finsbury Park, and Bloomsbury.

Nearby roads Kember Street and Carnoustie Street have also been taped off while forensic officers search the scene.
