A court in Bangladesh sentenced 16 people to death for the murder of 19-year-old Nusrat Jahan Rafi after she protested against sexual harassment by the principal of her school. The principle, Siraj-Ud-Doula is also among those sentenced.
Nusrat Jahan Rafi, residing in feni, a small town some 160Km outside the capital Dhaka was set on fire two weeks after she registered a complaint of sexual abuse against her school principal Siraj-Ud-Doula.
On April 6, Nusrat was tricked onto the roof of the madrasa where the culprits set her on fire after she refused to withdraw the case. She suffered burns to 80% of her body and died in hospital five days later. Afterward, her brother Mahmudal Husan Noam filed a case on April 8 against eight people.
The incident has shaken the entire world and sparked a mass protest against the oppression of women and girls.
