A man in Hawaii lost life after tumbling down a "lava tube" - a passage shaped by volcanic emissions - while cutting trees on his property.

Police say the 71-year-old had fallen about 22ft (7m) "through a delicate zone of the ground".

Lava tubes are shaped when magma cools and solidifies on its top layer yet keeps on depleting and cool underneath.

Police say the man was found on Monday after companions detailed that they had not gotten notification from him for quite a long time.

Hawaii Police Department Major Robert Wagner disclosed to Big Island Now that the pole the man fell into was inexact two feet (60cm) wide.

Fireteams abseiled into the gorge to recoup the body.

Dissimilar to more slow framing land highlights, similar to caverns and caves, lava tubes are regularly shaped in days and weeks, as indicated by National Geographic.

As that lava streams and depletes into the sea, it abandons labyrinth-like passages - some of which are more than 40 miles in length.
