The kid has been identified as Jezariah Tyrell, who was at her family's house at Wildman Street in Kingston, where they were attacked.
Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness also released a statement on the heinous killing and called the occurrence devastating. He said such incidents have become more often."This morning, we all woke up to the devastating news of the shooting death of 10-year-old Jezariah Tyrell. She was killed by unknown assailants at her home on Fleet Street, Kingston. Unfortunately, these incidents are taking place too often," added Holness on Facebook.
PM said he is very concerned about the troubling trend of children being victims and perpetrators of violence and murder.
"My heart goes out to the family during this difficult time. Once again, violence has reared its ugly head, and we are left to mourn. I am deeply saddened," said Holness. He also appealed to residents asking them to give all information to the security forces so the perpetrators could be brought to justice.
In recent months, Jamaican soil has been covered in the blood of hundreds of innocent people who were shot dead by criminals, intruders or robbers. As the New Year is approaching, people are hoping such incidents to stop and start afresh.
The killing of a 10-year-old brought new light to the rising crime rate in Jamaica; people are not only outraged but also anguish as such occurrences are now more rampant, despite the government calling upon "State of Emergency" in some parishes. As crime is becoming more often in the country, it is likely to impact the tourism sector ahead of the season.
