Kamla Persad Bissessar- Leader of the United National Congress, lashed on Health Minister Terrance Deyalsingh for allowing lawyers of governing People's National Movement to pocket over $37 million dollars.
"While poor people cannot get a bed and basic medicine in the hospital pharmacy, you (Deyalsingh) allowed PNM lawyers to pocket over $37 million dollars. Shame on you!," said Bissessar.
She stated that healthcare in Trinidad and Tobago has been a disaster under the PNM and Minister Deyalsingh. The opposition leader stated that the government is more concerned about fattening the pockets of their friends and family than ensuring that the hospital has the proper equipment, beds and medicine. "Shame on you. Shame on all of you."
"Tonight I ask you, how come you don't shed a tear for these poor people that the RHA lawyers are fighting down in court and earning millions when the candle could cost more than the funeral?." questioned the Opposition Leader. She stated that United National Congress have filed questions in the Parliament for each Ministry to say what the fees were in terms of legal fees and who were the lawyers.
"Their response was that they have to get the consent of the lawyers.
That is taxpayers' money. You have a duty for public accountability. You think you can get away with it; you will not! We will come at you again - we will use the Freedom of Information Act; you must answer those questions," said Bissessar.
