DHL, a subsidiary of Deutsche Post AG, was flying a Boeing 757-200 cargo plane with the distinctive yellow livery, which can be seen skidding down the runway after making an emergency landing in various social media footage.
After a hard landing, the plane went off the runway, into the grass, and broke in two, according to aviation authorities. Aeris, the airport operator, stated in a statement that the pilot and co-pilot were evacuated.
Many videos of the incident have gone viral, showing a yellow plane with a DHL logo on its tail and a broken wing being drenched with firefighting foam as it lay partially in a grass field and partly on the runway.
The crew was physically unharmed in the event, according to DHL, which also stated that "one crew member is receiving medical assistance as a precautionary measure."
Juan Santamaria airport, on the outskirts of San Jose's capital, was blocked for several hours, affecting 32 commercial flights to and from the US, Central America, Mexico, Canada, and Europe, according to Aeris.[embed]https://twitter.com/CR_Aviation/status/1512107527084728331?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1512107527084728331%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fzeenews.india.com%2Faviation%2Fdhl-plane-crash-lands-in-costa-rica-splits-in-two-after-emergency-landing-2451689.html[/embed]
According to Luis Miranda Munoz, Deputy Director of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Costa Rica, the aircraft heading for Guatemala had a hydraulic system malfunction, causing the pilot to request an emergency landing shortly after takeoff.
The plane is still on the ground, according to Munoz, and aviation authorities are waiting for it to be evacuated so that operations may restart. DHL said it is working with airport officials to move the plane off the runway as soon as possible so that normal airport operations can resume.
