To grow the population of Nevis, the island's admirative authorities have started taking steps by launching housing programme for returning the university students at Lower Spring Hill Estate through the assistance of Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation (NHLDC) in conjunction with the St. Christopher and Nevis Social Security Board.
Deputy Premier of Nevis and Minister responsible for Lands and Housing, Alexis Jeffers said, “I do believe if Nevis is to progress and if we were to ensure that we have sustainable development here on the island, we must increase our population. Thus, this particular development seeks to ensure that persons who would have gone abroad to study, we are encouraging them to come back to Nevis, come back to build a family or to start a family, build communities.”
He said that the major goal of the project is expected to get completed through this strategy and we will achieve it at some time in the coming future. “Nevis needs people but first and foremost we have to ensure that the persons we have here on the island we are able to keep them here and these initiatives will help us in seeing some steady growth in coming five or ten years.”
Mr. Jeffers also said that this University Heights housing programme’s main target is towards returning the university and four-year college students, and highlighted the requirements he believes serve as an incentive for the returning students five years after their return to Nevis.
As per Jeffers, the houses that are being built in the locality are ranged between $320,000 to $350,000.
Minister also stated that the interest rate of paying the mortgage for these is as less as five percent which is the lowest possible rate anywhere on the island of Nevis. “The monthly payments would range [from] $1,500 to $1,800, over an approximately 25-year period.”
