Elaine Thompson won Jamaica's second gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics by becoming the first woman to complete the sprint double at the quadrennial games. Thompson-Herah stormed to a new personal best and national record 21.53 seconds to decimate a powerful field, including her compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, who finished fourth in 21.94.
Silver went to Namibia's 19-year-old phenom Christine Mboma in 21.81, while American Gabrielle Thomas took bronze in 21.87. Thompson-Herah has cemented her place among the pantheon of the greatest ever female sprinters.
Thompson-Herah broke Florence Griffith Joyner's 33-year Olympic record in Tokyo, passing the line in just 10.61 seconds to secure her title and start a Jamaican range of the medals.
Griffith Joyner had made the old record of 10.62 at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. Thompson-Herah by beating her top rival, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, by 0.13 seconds on Saturday's competition.Another Jamaican, Shericka Jackson, who went to the shorter sprints for the Tokyo Olympics, won bronze in 10.76.
