On Saturday, Hurricane Grace swept Mexico with heavy rains, causing severe flooding and mudslides that killed at least eight people after hitting one of the most powerful storms in years to hit the country's Gulf Coast.
Grace blowing a maximum sustained wind of 125 miles per hour (201 km per hour), turned into a Category 3 hurricane on the five-stage Sapphire-Simpson scale as it climbed to the coast near Tecolutla in Veracruz State early in the morning.
The state government declared that over eight people were killed, including six from a single-family. The Mexican government said that all but one of the victims died in Xalapa, the state capital, including a young girl killed by a mudslide that hit her home.
A collapsed roof has killed an adult in the northern city of Poza Rica, Veracruz.
"The state of emergency is not over," he added.
Local television has shown severe flooding in Xalapa, with coffins floating through a waterproof road from a local store. The nearest river Actopan has closed its banks closed a local highway, state authorities said.
Ericka Herrera, a homemaker in Tecolutla, was in tears as she described the destruction.
"Not of this size that just destroys everything," she said. "It's really sad. Things are really bad."
Grace tore down windows, knocked down trees, power cables and telephone poles that left dirt around Tecolutla, even though there were no human casualties, local authorities stated.
Images of Veracruz posted on social media show damage to buildings and submerged cars. Several rivers were also flooded.
