The death toll has now risen to 1020. Aside from that, 62 other people have been infected with the fatal virus.
As a result, Guyana has documented 38,554 COVID-19 cases to date, with 36,639 patients recovering completely. In addition, 14 people are now battling the illness in the ICU.
A total of 838 persons are in home isolation, with another 43 in institutional isolation. With the rising number of coronavirus cases, the government of Guyana is making efforts to lower the infection rate. When the Pfizer COVID-19 pill Paxlovid is approved, Guyana will be open to using it, and private pharmaceutical businesses may be able to produce it here.
According to Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony, Pfizer has struck a deal with the World Health Organization's (WHO) patent production office, allowing countries to use its technology to produce the pill.
"We don't have pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity in the public sector," he said on Thursday, "but there are private companies here in Guyana that do, so if those companies work with the WHO patent office and are will be to bring that particular medicine to Guyana, it is what we want to procure."He did say that even if the drug isn't made in the country, the price is likely to be reasonable.
"If that does not happen, then we can be confident that once production begins, we will be able to obtain the medication at a reasonable price due to the large number of countries that will be producing it." So it's something we're looking into," added the health minister.
