Roseau, Dominica: Dr David Johnson- Chief Medical Officer of Dominica, stated that the country has recorded an average of 72 coronavirus cases per day. During a press briefing on Thursday, he said currently, there are 504 active cases of the virus in the country.  He said the total number of deaths due to coronavirus in Dominica is 47, and the health authorities continue to monitor the situation in all seven districts.  Dr Johnson said a cluster of coronavirus cases was recorded during the Christmas holiday season; however, the situation is now under control. He said more cases are being identified as the government focuses on aggressive coronavirus testing.  He said the surge is a result of people taking down their guard during the holiday season.  "We continue to improve the public health and social measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic," said Dr David Johnson- Chief Medical Officer.  Citing the official government statistics, he said since August 12, 2021, approximately 70% of the patients admitted at the COVID Care Complex in Portsmouth were either asymptomatic or had mild to moderate symptoms.  Vaccination Campaign in Dominica Dr David Johnson said that around 28671 people comprising 53.8% of the target population are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.   • All individuals who are 65-year-old or older are eligible for the booster dose
  • People over 18-year-old or above who live in long-term caring settings
  • People over 18-year-old or above who have an underlying illness
All the priority groups can take their booster dose six months after receiving their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. He stated the health officials administered around 1099 doses of booster shots.
