Political parties of the small Caribbean Island of Dominica seem well-packed with the preparations for upcoming general elections that are due by the year 2020. Today, Dominica Labour Party (DLP) launched its candidate for Grand Bay parliamentary constituency. The launch of Edward Registe was just another astounding event by the party in the Geneva Playing field of the constituency. Notably, the current Dominican government is formed by the DLP and it has been in power from almost two decades now.

It is to be mentioned that the opposition, United Workers Party (UWP) is still struggling to present another candidate face for the same constituency following the sudden demise of its rumored candidate late attorney Noreen John earlier this year.

All gathered in the event paid tribute to the late Prime Minister Pierre Charles and former Parliamentary Representative, the late John Fabian.

During his address speech at the Grand Bay candidate launch, Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit said that he appreciates the love and support he has got by the constituency in past years and he does not take it for granted.

PM also acknowledge the support by the current Grand Bay MP Justina Riviere. He said that Riviere stepped up to the plate when Labour needed that crucial continuity. “I shall miss her, as an elected Parliamentarian, but I am serving her notice now, that I know where she lives, and I know her telephone numbers....so my days of consulting her, are far from over.” added Skerrit.

PM described the new candidate Edward Registe as a person who has laboured hard for a long time in service of the Dominica Labour Party. He said that Registe has become a staple in the diet of Labour and kept spirits lifted in the darkest times.

Dr. Skerrit targeted the opposition United Workers Party by reminding the citizens about post-Hurricane Maria era where nobody from UWP stood up to help the citizens of the country in tough times.

Further, PM discussed the educational development being done by the government since the year 2000. He said “When this Labour government came into office in 2000, there were entire communities in Dominica without a single soul going to university. Labour changed all that.”

Skerrit compared United Workers Party with the comedy show ‘HoneyMooners’, he said “that the choice in these upcoming elections is between the Dominica Labour Party and today’s version of the HoneyMooners; running under the banner of the United Workers Party. I am amazed by how grown, so-called intelligent men and women could be walking up and down Dominica behind a man like Lennox Linton.”

During his address Edward Registe said that the people of Grand Bay had called upon me to rise to the challenge of leadership, I chose to delay my entry into the political arena until I was satisfied that I was fully prepared to take on the task.

“Today, I am happy to declare that I am ready to take on the task of leadership, I am ready to serve as the next parliamentary representative from the Grand Bay constituency.”

Divulging the details, aspirant of Parliament Representative Edwards Registe also noted some of the projects undertaken in Grand Bay constituency which includes, the refurbishing of local community centre, the repairs of youth centre, construction of roads and drains, development of housing apartments, improved water system, constructions of new bridges and many other which are yet to come in the constituency.

He also proposed a new fish landing facility in the constituency which will provide a platform to the fishers and later as a southern gateway to Dominica, “I invite you to join me on a journey to the new south city of the future, I propose the development of new fish landing facility, which will eventually evolve into a port of entry, it will not only serve as trading precinct but also as an escape route by sea in times of disaster when roads leading to the south of this community are compromised. He said that this port will be considered for the south what Kempinski is for the north(Portsmouth).”

“I am particularly happy to note that this year 12 students from Grand Bay constituency have obtained funding from the government to commence their pursuit of further education at various universities and 9 others received further assistance in their education,” he added.
