Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit shared his sympathies to the people of Nicaragua and Honduras for experiencing back to back hurricanes.

Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit shared his sympathies to the people of Nicaragua and Honduras for experiencing back to back hurricanes.
Dr Skerrit tweeted on Wednesday," Even as I speak. We continue to get reports of mass displacements and growing economic hardships among the people there. But even at a time when all nations are going through their challenges brought on by the COVID 19 pandemic, we must not forget the people of Nicaragua and Honduras, who now must contend with this additional challenge."

Over 400,000 people in Nicaragua were affected by Iota, and it is the strongest hurricane to ever hit the country. At the same time, About 2.9 million people in Central American country Honduras were affected by Hurricane Eta.
The 2020 hurricane season have been very active and caused severe destruction mainly in the Central American region. Hurricane Iota killed over 40 people in Nicaragua and 61 in Honduras. Besides this, the figures suggest that Hurricane Eta killed 58 people in Honduras.
Thousands of people were evacuated to shelters during the unprecedented times of COVID-19.
Dominica has itself endured many natural catastrophes including the massive Hurricane Maria in September 2017 and Tropical Storm Erika in August 2015.
After these hurricanes, the government of Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit has been working towards constructing over 5000 climate-resilient homes with a power of handling category five hurricanes.
The country is also on its path to be the world's first climate-resilient nation as the region is often targeted by natural catastrophes due to climate change.
