American Airlines increases direct flights from Miami to Dominica

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit shared progress on some significant projects during his Independence Day address on Wednesday. He said the government continues to focus on its resilience plan despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said as the country is moving towards a "Dynamic Dominica", tremendous interest has already been generated by the direct flights from Miami to Dominica, which American Airlines will operate from December this year. "The response has been so encouraging that American Airlines has informed that they will increase their number of flights to Dominica, from 2 times a week to 3 times a week, from January 5th," said PM Skerrit.

The direct flights will increase once the International Airport in Dominica is complete.
Discussing more achievements of the Dominica government, Prime Minister Skerrit said the Marigot Hospital is complete and awaiting the delivery of the equipment and furniture.
"We expect that in the first quarter of next year, the people of the Marigot Health District will access a full range of medical services at this facility," said PM Skerrit.

Talking further about medical infrastructure, Prime Minister said six new Health and Wellness Centres are already in operation. He said six additional centres will be opened by the first quarter of 2022, while designs are being finalized for the new Health and Wellness Centres in Roseau, St. Joseph and Savanne Paille.
Other significant ongoing projects
- East Coast Road: PM said the $127 million projects would ensure the residents are safe, even during harsh weather conditions. He said the project will also improve the socio-economic activities of the communicates in the East.
- Hillsborough Bridge: The bridge is expected to complete by January 2022. PM said the Layou Hillsborough Bridge between the York Valley Bridge is progressing steadily and is expected to complete by December 2022. "The $11.5 million investment is expected to create several opportunities in the agriculture and tourism sector.
- Loubiere to Bagatelle Road project: The geotechnical surveys for the Loubiere to Bagatelle Road project have been completed, and the detailed designs are being finalized. Construction works are on course to begin in the second quarter of the new year. This project will significantly improve the resilience and safety of the roadway and include the construction of the Mitcham bridge and several other new bridges.
- Resilient Housing: Prime Minister Skerrit said new homes are being constructed island-wide, and the European Union-funded housing project in the Kalinago Territory will also begin shortly. He said the future plan would be unveiled in a few months to benefit public officers, young professionals and persons in the diaspora.
- Emergency Shelters: The regional emergency shelters under construction at Jimmit will complete in December and the other in Castle Bruce in the first quarter of next year. PM said the government recently approved the preliminary designs for a multipurpose cultural centre in the Kalinago Territory, serving as a hurricane shelter.
