Trinidad and Tobago: Many women now choose to remain single rather than coexist in a relationship with ups and downs. Tricia St John, a woman with a motto of 'Single and Loving it', recently shone on social media when this statement of being single left users keen about her personal life. Notably, Tricia St John is a recognised author, motivational speaker, co-ordinator, and domestic violence survivor. She lost her forearm and two fingers of her right hand in a domestic violence attack in 2004 by her ex-husband. However, after the incident, St John moved ahead in her life well, didn't turn back, and married again. In March 2021, She was awarded and recognised by the Traditional African Women's Organisation with the Harriet Tubman/Claudia Jones Award and continued to raise awareness among her community through her abusive story in the same year by November. In a recent interview, St John unfolded several facts about her personal life. She said, "Many independent women prefer visiting relationships, but for those of us who don’t, where are the men we should meet and marry?" Further, she highlighted that being single is really challenging. As Single women often face many challenges with the one being most common old-age question, "When are you getting married? Marry who?," she added. Moving ahead, she also shared that there is often constant scrutiny and judgement from family and friends, sometimes even strangers. "As a single woman, I know how emotionally distressing it is to be subjected to questioning and or criticism regarding our marital status," she continued. While expressing her disbelief in marriages, she noted, "I have many married friends who profess to be happy and share happy pics, but when you listen to them talk, they are exhausted from caring for men who don’t help around the house, don’t join them in prayer, don’t show a united front for the sake of the children and don’t consider their needs." She said she has no desire to walk around behind any grown man, clean up after him, come home from an exhausting day, and be expected to start dinner from scratch even though her husband/partner got home. "I used to believe that romantic relationships were essential for happiness and well-being, but that was then … now, not so much," she said while adding that Prince Charming is a fairy tale figure who comes to the rescue of a girl in distress and must have to engage in a quest to liberate her from an evil spell. Several users on social media were seen as suspicious of her statements and made several reactions, stating, "Single and loving it...? Could be in a relationship and loving it too." "Choose wisely, and your marriage will last. Don't run away from the downs of marriage, growing and maturing helps you appreciate your partner more," another user added. Meanwhile, many users also felt relatable to her situation and beliefs and quoted several statements. A user, Leah Issacs, added, "I had been single before for two years & a half, but choice after marriage didn't work out. It was tough, but keeping my sanity was worth it." While another user, Tracy Tray, mentioned, "I was single for four years ( by choice), and I loved it. No stress, just peace of mind and happiness. I'm an introvert, so being alone and peaceful makes me happy. At times, you may feel for a companion, but not for a long time. I have now found a wonderful guy who compliments my life.
