Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has declared that due to the extensive spread of COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago, a slew of closures will be executed from August 17.
These measures are expected to remain in place for at least 28 days.
During the press conference, the PM announced the closure of gyms, casinos, houses of worship, casinos and members clubs. Access to beaches and rivers will be suspended once again.
In-house dining at restaurants, food courts and bars has been suspended.
The Minister of National Security clarified that these businesses are not closed, but will have to facilitate takeaway only services. Buyers will not be allowed to consume food and drink on the premises or in the territories.
Public transport has been reduced to operating capacities of 50 per cent and domestic travel via the air bridge and sea bridge will also be reduced to essential travel only.
Dr Rowley said teaching institutions will also remain closed until further notice.
This means that school will not reopen as planned on September 1. In fact, the Prime Minister indicated it was unlikely that school will reopen before December 31.
However, the SEA exam will continue on August 20 as planned.
Weddings and funerals will have numbers of up to ten people.
The Prime Minister also disclosed that the government is looking at instituting laws to make mask-wearing mandatory. He says those who have not adhered to moral suasion will now become a matter for the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
Dr Rowley requested to the public to be responsible in the face of the COVID-19 crisis. He called for unity and understanding in the face of the new measures
