Stopping diaspora from voting in SKN will be a step backward, says Former Prime Minister Dr. Douglas

Former Prime Minister and leader of SKN Labour Party Dr. Denzil Douglas addressed the nation through his weekly live radio show Ask the leader on KYSS FM.

Dr. Douglas said that the NextGen SKN team is getting a tremendous response from St. Kitts and Nevis people residing in foreign countries who are looking for a change in government on the Island.

"Our constitution gives right of voting to the diaspora, and disenfranchising them from doing so will be a step backward. If such a bill is passed in the government then the SKN Labour Party will challenge it in the court." added Dr. Douglas.

As per Dr. Douglas, the current government which is being led by Prime Minister Timothy Harris is afraid of the support that SKN Next-gen is receiving in foreign countries so they are trying to bring a bill in parliament that will exempt the diaspora from voting in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Dr. Douglas stated, "These citizens of SKN Nevis who are residents abroad are speaking for themselves in protest against any move that robs their birthright which is to vote, as long as their birth certificate says that they are born in SKN they have a right to register their vote in upcoming general elections."

He said that 17% of the GDP of St. Kitts and Nevis is dependent upon a large amount of money sent by diaspora to their families living on these two islands.

During the show, Dr. Douglas also congratulated the party members for their successful town hall meetings that were conducted in New York and Miami in recent days. St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party members recently addressed the diaspora residing in respective cities.

As per Former Prime Minister, the NextGen team got a rockstar response in Miami and New York town hall meetings.

So far, NextGen Labour Party has successfully conducted town hall meetings in London, Birmingham, and Toronto where diaspora enthusiastically showcased their support to the political party.

The leader discussed several issues through his radio talk show but his major focus remained towards saving the voting rights of the diaspora in St. Kitts and Nevis.
