St Kitts and Nevis: Former elections supervisor charged with misconduct

The former elections supervisor in St Kitts and Nevis has been arrested and carried over two counts of in public office, causing political rumbles.

Wingrove George was taken into custody on Friday before being granted bail.

According to the Royal St Christopher and Nevis Police Force, George has been forced to give up his travel documents and may not leave the country.

He must also report to Frigate Bay police station every Monday and Friday morning while the matter in ongoing.

Police haven’t commented on the specifics of each charge but one local blog states that one relates to alleged “computer breaches”.

According to a release from press secretary to the prime minister, the charges relate to delaying the declaration of results in two constituencies during the 2015 general election.

The opposition St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party said over the weekend that “no credible charges” have been made against George.

“Prime Minister [Timothy] Harris has sought to take away the liberty of Mr George because of Mr George’s strong criticism of his government,” a statement said.
