St Kitts and Nevis ‘boasts universal access to water’
Head of Water Service Department says country is ‘fortunate’
The Federation go St Kitts and Nevis is prepare to meet the challenge of increased water consumption, according to the head of the Water Services Department.
T Dennison Paul, said that the country was lucky to boast universal access to water.
“Fortunately for us… we have universal access to water in St Kitts and Nevis. Everyone has access to water.,” he said.
“In fact, 98% of our population has access to pipe-borne water in their homes.”
The remains 2% have access to 260 public standpipes that are scattered across the island, he added.
“So we are much more fortunate than others in faraway places.”
In addition to universal access, the WSD manager said that the federation also boasts water that meets international standards.
“Our water quality is excellent in most instances. We have 26 wells … and of those wells the quality of the water is excellent.”
“As of two years ago, all of our surface supplies are being disinfected through the means of chlorination. So we have universal access and we have excellent water for the populace.”
Earlier this month, Ian Liburd – the minister responsible for the WSD – spoke about the subject of water in St Kitts and Nevis to mark World Water Day.
He stressed that the federation is fortunate to have access to universal pipe borne water, and noted that the his ministry will continue in this endeavour to ensure that this is maintained.
