Sagicor donates US$1 million to fight the spread of COVID-19

The Sagicor Financial Group has pledged US$1 million to help within the Caribbean’s fight against the coronavirus.

According to a company-issued statement, Sagicor has already engaged in talks with governments and health ministries in Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and also the Director-General of the OECS about possible ways to support containment and response efforts.

Focus is placed on early detection and providing the mandatory equipment for the immediate care of these already infected.

The corporate is in talks with the govt. of Barbados about plans to get “walk-through” scanners which can be placed at the island’s ports of entry.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the team is functioning with the govt. To supply critical medical equipment, while in Jamaica, Sagicor is coordinating efforts with other private companies to finance the acquisition of medical equipment and tools for grade school students who are currently out of college.

Handheld scanners and medical supplies are already being distributed across the Eastern Caribbean.

Sagicor Group President Dodridge Miller, said this move is in line with the company’s history of support for the communities during which they operate.

“We all have to support initiatives which minimise risk and reduce the spread of this It'ss. It's not only the responsibility of governments to reply to the current challenge, but also that of corporate citizens,” he said.

Miller said Sagicor is set to partner with regional governments in their efforts to safeguard citizens from the fast-spreading virus.
