PM Drew extends greetings as Grenada celebrates half century of Independence

PM Drew said it is a huge pleasure for him to extend congratulations to his dear friend Dickon Mitchell and the people of Grenada

Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew extended congratulations to his Grenadian counterpart Dickon Mitchell as the island celebrated its 50 years of independence on Wednedsay.

He also referred to the 50th Independence a half century of resilience for Grenada, and wished for the island's continued development and progress in the future.

"As you celebrate half a century of resilience, unity, and progress as Grenada marks its 50th year of independence under the inspiring theme "One People, One Journey, One Future," added PM Drew.

He further added that as Grenada reflects the remarkable journey of the past five decades, he urged the residents to honour the sacrifices and achievements that have shaped Grenada into the vibrant nation it is today. PM Terrance Drew also highlighted the theme of Grenada's 50th anniversary, 'One People, One Journey, One Future,' and said that it encapsulates the shared vision where every citizen contributes to the collective prosperity and well-being of the nation. "It symbolizes the resilience of the Grenadian spirit and the commitment to building a brighter future together," added the St Kitts and Nevis PM. To the friends and partners in Grenada, Dr Drew said, "May this milestone anniversary be a joyous celebration of achievements past and a launchpad for even greater successes in the years ahead. Happy Independence Day, Grenada!".

Grenada gained its independence from Britain and Eric Gairy, who became Grenada's first prime minister. Each year, on February 7, Grenadians celebrate the anniversary of their independence. "The Spice Island" is known for its wealth of nutmeg, allspice, clove, and cinnamon.

Meanwhile, on the Independence Anniversary, Prime Minister of Grenada Dickon Mitchell joined the Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Sir Eric Matthew Gairy's gravesite on Cemetery Hill, St. George.

During the ceremony, he outlined, "As we celebrate this 50th anniversary of our Independence, let us reflect on the legacy of Sir Eric Matthew Gairy, whose vision and leadership paved the way for our sovereign nation."

At the site, the officials paid heartfelt tribute to the Father of Independence. Present were Sir Eric Gairy's daughter, Marcel Gairy; Minister for Health, Hon. Philip Telesford; Minister for Legal Affairs, Claudette Joseph; Minister for Finance, Dennis Cornwall; Ambassador, Special Envoy for Development and Investment in the Prime Minister's Office, Ms. Andrea St. Bernard among other attendees.
