Wednesday, 28th June 2017

Police in Grenada have revealed that a man has been killed at Mount Gay Psychiatric Hospital.

WIC News understands he was strangled by another patient at the institution.

Anthony Alexander, 49, was being held at the Rathdune Unit before his death.

He was from Laura Land, St David’s.

In a statement from the Royal Grenada Police Force, officers said that the attack happened at around 5am on Saturday, 24 June.

No further details have been revealed at this time.

Mount Gay Psychiatric Hospital was built in the mid-1980s, replacing an older facility at Richmond Hill that was destroyed during the US-led intervention during October 1983.

According to the Ministry of Health website, the institution was built “to accommodate patients suffering from mental illness and as the hub of the mental health services in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.”
