Larry turns into category 3 Hurricane as it approaches Bermuda, likely to get more intense

Hurricane Larry, a huge storm that is moving across the open ocean will make intense effects as it continues its long journey across the Atlantic. It is expected to take a blow at Bermuda as dangerous seas and surf propagate out to the east coast of the United States.

AccuWeather forecasts expect parts of Atlantic Canada might take a hit from Larry. It is also suspected of remaining a massive storm, with either a dangerously near approach or direct landfall.

Larry turned into a very large large Category 3 hurricane early Wednesday morning as it moved 660 miles (1,060 km) southeast of Bermuda. The hurricane reached a maximum sustained wind speed of 115 km / h (185 km / h) and came closer to Bermuda while moving northwest with 12 km / h (19 km / h).

Satellite images show that the hurricane was not only large, but its eye was also quite large and threatening. Hurricane-force winds of 74 km / h or more extend outward up to 110 miles from the center of the massive storm. Winds from a tropical storm force of 39 km / h (63 km / h) or greater extend outward to 185 miles (295 km).

Larry's eye was about 60 miles (97 km) on Tuesday morning, but it was even larger, close to 70 miles wide later. To put this in perspective, the width of Florida to the width of Miami is about 75 miles across. When Hurricane Ida hit the Louisiana coastline as a Category 4 storm more than a week ago, its well-defined eye was 17 miles wide.

Larry will continue to move northwest and then once more head north across the Atlantic, and large thresholds will continue to propagate outward from the hurricane's core.

As these swells reach shallow waters off the U.S. east coast, large eruptions lead to dangerous currents. With limited rescue coverage after Labor Day weekend, beachgoers are urgently advised to heed the advice of local officials. Cruise, transatlantic shipping and offshore fishing interests should monitor the progress of this hurricane.
