Independence day celebrations will take place in conference room of the State House: PM Skerrit

As Dominica celebrates its independence day on November 03, Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit stated that the celebrations are subdued due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. He added that on Saturday alone, over seven individuals tested positive for the virus on Island, which makes the total active cases 22.

Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit stated that the National Day Observer ceremony would take place on November 3; however, there would not be an event at the stadium, and the celebrations will be limited to a conference room of the State House due to the coronavirus.

"We will have limited number of people in attendance, but the whole country will get an opportunity to be part of the ceremony via live broadcasting on television, radio and Facebook," added Dr Roosevelt Skerrit.

Some Dominicans would receive their awards and honours by President Charles Savarin for their contribution to the country's development on the independence day.

Furthermore, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit stated that this is not a time to rush into decisions, and coronavirus can get under control in Dominica. He advised all citizens and residents to exercise caution and follow all the protocols.

Besides this, Prime Minister thanked the Gaston Browne-Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda for Liat flights between the countries.

Health Minister Dr Irving McIntyre also joined prime Minister in the recent episode of Anou Palay which went live on Sunday evening.

"We pride ourselves to having responded to COVID-19 pandemic, over the past few months we had great success in controlling the spread and providing treatment for the patients," added Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit.

Health Minister Dr Irving McIntyre stated that the illegal entries do play a significant role in increasing coronavirus cases in Dominica. He said that their status is unaware by the administrations, which makes it difficult to control.
