Category 5 Hurricane Dorian parked itself over the northwestern Bahamas on Sunday night and Monday morning, unleashing a devastating storm surge, destructive winds, and blinding rain. Perched perilously close to the Florida peninsula, Monday is the critical day that is likely to determine whether the state is dealt a powerful blow or a less intense scrape.

Also, Bahamas Press has named the first victim of the hurricane as seven-year-old, Lachino Mcintosh. He drowned after his family attempted to relocate their home, it reported.

Hubert Minnis, the prime minister of Bahamas, says the devastation in Abaco is “unprecedented”. In a tweet, he added: “Our focus right now is rescue, recovery, and prayer.”

The Bahamas minister of foreign affairs, Darren Henfield said that “From all accounts, we have received catastrophic damage along the front strip from Marsh Harbour ... We have been informed that Coopers Town was holding quite well.”

In addition to that, he said, “We have reports of casualties. We have reports of bodies being seen. We cannot confirm those reports until we go out and have a look for ourselves.

He also asked the citizens to stay inside as the situation on the outside is not safe he said, “It is not safe to go outdoors. Power lines are down, lampposts are down, and trees are across the street. It is very dangerous to be outdoors if you don’t have to be. As soon as the weather permits our first responders will go to those areas where we have had reports from individuals who were in distress.”
