Haiti: Top official arrested in assassination of President Moise

The Police authorities of Haiti island has arrested a top official in the assassination of President Jovenel Moise. The top official - Jean Laguel Civil, served as the general security coordinator.

Haiti: The Police authorities of Haiti island has arrested a top official in the assassination of President Jovenel Moise. The top official - Jean Laguel Civil, served as the general security coordinator. So far, more than a dozen suspects have been arrested by the Haitian Police in the killing of the President at his residence. The Attorney of Civil - Reynold Georges, has described his client’s arrest as a political stunt. The arrest of Civil comes while more than 1,000 protestors rallied around one of President Haiti’s most notorious gang leaders to honour President Moïse. The crowd in the rally was dressed in white as they cheered on Jimmy Cherizier, who is a retired police officer who now leads G9.

G9 is an organisation of 9 gangs that has been blamed for spur in the violence and kidnappings in past months.

President Moise was shot numerous times in an attack on 7 July 2021. Martine Moise - the wife of President Moise, also got seriously injured in the attack, after which she was taken for treatment to Florida. So far, atleast around 26 people have been arrested, which includes 18 former Colombian soldiers. Haitian Police is still looking for several suspects, which includes a former rebel leader and an ex-Haitian senator.

One more suspect in the assassination of President Moise was identified on Monday, that is Haiti Superior Court Judge Windelle Coq Thelot.

The funeral ceremony of President Moise took place on 24 July, 2021. The body of assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was passed to his hometown on Friday for a private funeral between heavy security amid ongoing violent protests and fears of political buoyancy in the Caribbean island.

As the funeral ceremony began, hundreds of protesters collided with police outside the residence of President Moise as the gunshots emitted and tear gas and black smoke blew into the ceremony.
