Guyana: Presidential guards test positive for COVID-19

Eight ranks of the Presidential Guard of Guyana have tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Guyana Police Force said the infected officers were detected during a random testing exercise. The officers are being quarantined at a state facility.

Meanwhile, Assistant Director for Public Information and Press Services in Guyana’s Ministry of the Presidency, Ariana Gordon said the infected officers are not part of the Special Protective Service Arm of the Presidential Guard Unit and did not have close contact with President David Granger or his family members.

She said they are part of the uniformed branch located at Vlissengen Road, Georgetown.

“The President has been working remotely for some time and has not been in contact with uniformed members of the Presidential Guard Unit,” Gordon said in a release as she noted the eight cases are not new infections.
