Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugh Todd has tested positive for the coronavirus confirmed by President Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali during a national address today.
Ali explained that Todd informed him that he came into contact with someone who recently tested positive for the virus.
All members of Ali’s cabinet will be tested for the virus and they have been mandated to quarantine themselves until they are cleared.
The President also said he is informing citizens of this development in an effort to keep his promise to have a transparent government.
According to Ali, “COVID-19 is a global pandemic that must be addressed frontally. My Government has taken a holistic and comprehensive approach which prioritises testing, increased provision of personal protective equipment and an inter-agency collaboration in response to this pandemic."
I commit to doing everything necessary to ensure the safety of the Guyanese people, he added.
He has called on all citizens to follow COVID-19 guidelines to protect themselves from contracting the virus.
