Guyana: A 68-year-old was given a life sentence on Tuesday after being found guilty of raping a three-year-old. According to the reports, the suspect is said to have engaged in sexual penetration with the girl.

He inserted his fingers into the girl’s vagina and also forced her to perform oral sex on him.

The police officials added that Isaiah Hutson was found guilty in court last month during a trial at the Demerara Sexual Offences Court in Guyana.

Judge Sandil Kissoon, while handing down the sentence, mentioned the prevalence of sexual offences against children, which included rape and the fact that the suspect abused his position of trust.

Considering the major offence committed by the 68-year-old, the Judge said that the convict deserved the maximum punishment of life in prison.

The reports stated that between January and February 2019, the suspect carried out the brutal act at a village in Region Three named Essequibo Islands-West Demerara. The girl reported the incident to her mother, and she called the police officials.

The police immediately took action and took the suspect into custody, following which a series of trials were conducted to find him guilty.

Justice Kissoon said that the convict would also undergo counselling and therapy, which is specifically designed for sex offenders and paedophiles, in order to aid in his rehabilitation.

In addition to this, the Judge also mandated that the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security provide the rape survivor and her mother with ongoing psychosocial support.

Hutson must spend 18 years behind bars before he is eligible for parole. The state’s case was led by prosecutors Abiola Lowe and Yonika Rowland while Hutson was represented by Attorney-at-Law Ronald Bostwick.

Meanwhile, the citizens and residents of Guyana also appreciated the officials for finalising the strict punishment for the wrongdoer.

Shanta Narine, a citizen on social media, said, “He has taken away her innocence ...this is her time to play with other kids her age...now he has traumatised her....I pray to God that he will heal her.” Another user, Zoe, wrote that the suspect deserved to die over and over again.
