Jamaica: 29-year-old athlete Shericka Johnson and 22-year-old Antonio Watson won the prestigious title of RJR/ Gleaner Sports Award of the year 2023 for their outstanding performances.
The award ceremony took place on Friday, January 19, 2024, at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston, organized by the RJR/Gleaner Sports Foundation.
Several delegations from the Ministry of Sport and Community Development attended the event, where Minister Cudjoe-Lewis presented the titles to the awardees and congratulated them on their achievements.
The event aimed to celebrate and honour the best athletes, with Danielle Williams and Hansle Parchment being awarded the runner-up title for their stellar performances in the male and female categories last year.
The awards ceremony was one of the major highlights in the Jamaican sporting calendar, recognizing outstanding achievements of athletes who have excelled nationally and internationally.
Shericka Jackson, the female title award winner, had an impressive year. Her accomplishments include capturing gold in the women’s 200-metre final at the 2023 Budapest World Championships in 21.41 seconds – the second-fastest time ever recorded. She also won silver medals in the 100m and the 4x100m at the championships.
Antonio Watson, the male title award winner, gave the nation its first 400m World title in 40 years since Bert Cameron won gold in the 1983 Helsinki World Championships. During the ceremony, he was also awarded the People’s Choice award, which added to his growing trophy cabinet.
After ending the 2023 season as Jamaica's fastest woman, the fastest woman alive in the 200m, Jackson was seen adding her glimmers to the event and turning up in a breathtaking red dress to receive her National Sportswoman of the Year Award.
On receiving the trophy, Watson expressed gratitude and thanked everyone for their consistent love and support. "Sportsman of the Year, thanks for the love and support. This recognition on Friday night (19 Jan) is a testament to his hard work and dedication," he added on receiving the prestigious title of Gleaner Sports Award 2023.
