Basseterre, St Kitts: The Government of St Kitts and Nevis have decided to write off 11 million debt owed by Liat, the Caribbean Airline. A resolution has been passed to cancel the debt amount.
As per the Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris, the decision have been made to relieve the debt on a request filed by the liquidator.
Facebook page of Liat suggests that the airline is being restructured and reorganized following a decision taken by the government of Antigua and Barbuda.
Prime Minister Harris noted that the government have made the settlement by contemplating the “adverse condition” of the regional carrier. He continued that it also reaffirms St Kitts and Nevis’ dedication to the regional alliance and regional travel.
Furthermore, Dr Timothy Harris added that LIAT Airlines is the largest carrier supporting inter-regional travel and without this airline, there would be a big void resulting in a significant effect on the movement of inhabitants of St Kitts and Nevis between sister islands.
“Mindful of the difficulties that LIAT has suffered, we believe that we must take this place in the best benefit of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and even the region as a whole.”
The regional carrier resumed its flights on a reduced commercial schedule on November 30, 2020. It will run flights to and from the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport in St. Kitts on Saturdays only in the beginning phase.
